Causes of Headaches
Ninety-five percent of headaches are primary headaches including:  tension, migraine, or cluster headaches. These types of headaches are not caused by disease. The headache itself is the primary concern. To help your doctor determine the kind of headache you have, it is a good idea to keep track of the location of your headache, the time of day or month it occurs, how often it appears, if something in particular seems to ‘trigger’ it, and what seems to make it feel better or worse.  This will aid your doctor in finding the root cause of your headache and developing a treatment plan.

How We Can Help!

What do you do when you suffer from a pounding headache? Do you grit your teeth and carry on? Lie down? Pop a pill and hope the pain goes away? There is a better alternative.

The medical approach to treating headaches is usually through over the counter or prescription drugs.  This may not be for everyone as drugs don’t cure headaches, they only mask symptoms.   Headache drugs can be:

  • Toxic (causes stress on the liver and kidneys)
  • Expensive (especially for long term treatment)
  • Produce Side Effects (drowsiness, nausea, high blood pressure, weight gain, mood swings, dependency & addiction, worsening of headaches (called “rebound headaches”), itching, weakened immune system, trouble sleeping, blurry vision and more)

Instead of masking symptoms with toxic chemicals, you can try North Brunswick Chiropractic for a natural approach.  We use a combination of treatments to cure your headaches including chiropractic adjustments, physical therapy, nutritional analysis, and even acupuncture!

Fortunately, many types of headaches can be relieved or eliminated with chiropractic care."The greatest majority of primary headaches are associated with muscle tension in the neck," says Dr. George B. McClelland, a doctor of chiropractic from Christiansburg, VA, and chairman of the American Chiropractic Association's (ACA) Board of Governors. "Today, Americans engage in more sedentary activities than they used to, and more hours are spent in one fixed position or posture. This can increase joint irritation and muscle tension in the neck, upper back and scalp, causing your head to ache."

Evidence Supporting Chiropractic Care for Headaches

A report released in 2001 by researchers at the Duke University Evidence-Based Practice Center in Durham, NC, found that spinal manipulation resulted in almost immediate improvement for those headaches that originate in the neck, and had significantly fewer side effects and longer-lasting relief of tension-type headache than a commonly prescribed medication.
(2001), Duke University Study

Spinal manipulative therapy is an effective treatment for tension headaches and that those who ceased chiropractic treatment after four weeks experienced a sustained therapeutic benefit in contrast with those patients who received a commonly prescribed medication.
